Cookie Policy

Last updated: April 27, 2026

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. We keep our use of cookies to a minimum. We also use a cookieless analytics tool (Umami, self-hosted) that does not identify you and does not require consent. Any third-party analytics that does use cookies is only loaded after you explicitly allow it.

Strictly necessary (no consent required)

These cookies are required for the site to function and are exempt from consent under Romanian Law 506/2004 and the EU ePrivacy Directive.

  • payload-token - first-party, session-length. Keeps an admin user logged into the /admin area. Not set for ordinary readers.
  • theme- first-party, ~1 year. Remembers whether you chose light or dark mode so the site doesn't flash on every page load.
  • rhl-cookie-consent- first-party, ~1 year. Records your answer to the cookie banner (accepted, declined, or dismissed) so we don't ask again on every page.

Cookieless analytics (no consent required)

We run two cookieless analytics tools that do not identify you and are exempt from the consent requirement under Romanian Law 506/2004 / EU ePrivacy:

  • Umami - counts page views without cookies or persistent IDs.
  • Google Analytics 4 in Consent Mode v2 (denied) - sends anonymous, cookieless pings so we get baseline traffic numbers from every visitor. No _gacookies are set, no user identifier is sent, and Google's ad and personalization features are disabled.

Optional analytics (only after you accept)

If you accept analytics in the cookie banner, GA4 is upgraded to Consent Mode v2 (granted) and starts setting the following cookies, which give us accurate session and returning-visitor metrics:

  • _ga - third-party (Google), 2 years. Distinguishes unique visitors.
  • _ga_<ID> - third-party (Google), 2 years. Maintains the analytics session state.

GA is configured with IP anonymisation and the data retention is set to the GA-platform minimums (2 months for events, 14 months for user-scoped data). We do not enable Google's advertising features.

How to withdraw or change consent

You can change your mind any time. Click Cookie settings in the site footer (or use the button below) to re-open the banner. Declining clears the GA cookies on your next page load.

You can also block or delete cookies directly in your browser settings:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security
  • Safari: Settings → Privacy
